Citric acid 50% issue

Chris Pearson
Hi all,
Last night I was thinking about how we could resolve the current 50% citric acid supply issue and going back to the recent ART conference topic of greening HD thought of a possible solution,do you think it would be acceptable to supply a can with a pre-measured amount of citric acid crystals and a 5L line on the can and then add RO water on-site or would that be too labour intensive or too risky from a H&S POV ?

Seems like that's probably a no then :-(

Hi Chris,
I think there would have to be an attractive cost saving before we'd look at the logistics of mixing cans though my first though was it sounded like a plausible idea.  As you say, various risks and other factors to consider that may well vary between customers.   Memories of mixing bicarb powder are coming back to me!

I‘m also unsure how other equipment manufacturer’s utilise the acid.  With our Brauns the equipment looks for a set conductivity so unsure how ‘exact’ the dilution would be need to be.

Certainly sounds attractive from the green point of view and would make our receipt and distribution happier with the issues of delivering the current volumes from the opposite end of the hospital!

Hi Chris,
I remember doing this in Glasgow as one of my jobs as the junior tech. It was a pain as the chief tech had the AK-100's set to draw in 1L of the diluted amount (5%ish). So each machine had to have an individual bottle measured out each week. These days with permanent attachments for the chemicals and dilution within the machine it would be much easier. The COSHH wouldn't be to difficult and mixing up a can once every three months or so isn't too onerous.

If an individual can't measure out 5 litres accurately then they're in the wrong job!

RO cleaning solutions come in powder form and that seems to go OK...

If we were going really green then we'd reuse the can and you'd buy a premeasured pouch of crystals instead?

Thanks Ian and Fraser, seems it should be quite easy especially given that surely it can't be that critical that it is exactly 50%.
However I think from a H&S standpoint it would have to be a new can with a measured amount of crystal in but completely agree it would be much easier and greener to re-use the same can.
