Dual role technicians

Do any renal departments have technicians that have a dual role across both renal and general biomedical engineering?

It's one of the options that has been raised for consideration as we face around 60% of the department eyeing up retirement.  Whether this dual role would be more of a 'preparation' phase to allow a suitable person to step into a full time role or something that would continue as a supplemental role is to be decided.

It would be good to have a chat with anybody who has experience and hear some views on pros and cons.  View of both managers and those who may have worked in role would be interesting
